What is?

Inclusive Business

Inclusive businesses are private sector companies that generate profits by providing goods, services, and livelihood opportunities to people at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) (low-income populations) on a commercially viable basis, making them a part of the company's value chain as customers, suppliers, distributors, or employees.

Inclusive businesses create innovative and affordable solutions for the needs of low-income communities, turning underserved populations into active suppliers, consumers, and distributors; while also benefiting the businesses by creating new markets and products. Investments into and partnerships with inclusive businesses thus create positive systemic change for BoPs, communities and society.

BoP

Base-of-the-Pyramid (BoP) refers to low income households and groups in a country. They usually comprise the largest base of the income pyramid in most developing and emerging countries. BoPs can be further categorised into Very Poor (VP); Poor ((P); and low income groups.

For the purposes of inclusive business discussion in Ghana, BoPs are broadly defined as households with monthly income of less than GHC4,500 in urban areas and less than GHC3,500 in rural areas.

Inclusive business concept and practice promotes commercially viable business innovation that improves the income and/or living standards of BoPs whist earning income for the business.

 IBC

ThirdWell Inclusive Businesses Centre (IBC) is a private not-for-profit organization with the strategic objective of empowering inclusive businesses by promoting  investment into and partnerships with such businesses. Empowering inclusive businesses will significantly enhance their capacity to sustain and scaleup systemic impact by improving incomes and living standards of low income groups (BoPs). IBC is a successful outcome of the Inclusive Business Initiative in Ghana headed by the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI).

IBC is primarily a business and investment services centre for inclusive businesses seeking business services and partnerships on one hand; and investors seeking rewarding opportunities in viable and verifiable impact driven businesses, on the other hand.
